Good plants start with good decisions. We take the complexity out of custom potting substrates.
Step 01
Know your plant
Different roots, leaves, and growing habits need different support. Climbing epiphytes need loose bark; ferns thrive on dense moisture.
Step 02
Match the conditions
Light levels, room temperature, and seasonal watering rhythms dictate whether your substrate should hold water or speed up drainage.
Step 03
Give roots room
The right structure helps roots breathe freely, shed excess water instantly, and develop healthy fibrous root hairs.
Plants that don't want soil
Aroid Mix
Aroids grow on trees, orchids on bark, succulents and cacti in grit. None of them want to sit in soil. This chunky, fast-draining blend gives roots air, dries in 4-6 days, and makes root rot very hard to cause.
WATERING
Water when the top 5cm is dry - weekly for aroids, every 2-3 weeks for succulents and cacti.
FEEDING
Plant GROW every two weeks (monthly for succulents).

Potting Mix
A balanced, free-draining all-rounder for plants that want proper soil around their roots, ferns, palms, ficus, calatheas, flowering shrubs and most ornamentals. It holds enough moisture for a week, drains before it goes sour.

Water when the top 3cm is dry - every 5-7 days; ferns and calatheas want more.
FEEDING
Plant GROW monthly; BOOST before flowering.

How do I choose between Aroid and Potting mix?
If your plant naturally climbs trees or has thick, aerial roots (like Monsteras, Pothos, and Philodendrons), choose the Aroid Mix. For leafy upright plants, ferns, ficus, and small foliage, our everyday Potting Mix is the ideal moisture-balanced home.
When is the best time of year to repot?
Early spring through summer is optimal when active leaf growth is occurring. However, if a plant is severely rootbound or sitting in compacted, foul-smelling soil, repotting right away will prevent root rot regardless of season.
Are Sprout Lab mixes 100% peat-free?
Yes, every blend is crafted with sustainably harvested coconut coir, composted bark, perlite, and pumice. We do not use mined sphagnum peat moss.
